SPAR International Names UK Exec As New President

Dominic Hall, the joint Managing Director of James Hall & Co, has been elected President of SPAR International, the world’s largest voluntary retail food network.

The announcement was made at the 67th International SPAR Congress. It is the inaugural election of a SPAR UK representative to the role.

Having worked in the James Hall & Co family business since 1999, Dominic represents the fifth generation of the Hall family. He has also been a Board member of the SPAR UK Food Distributors since 2007, held the position of Chair of the National Guild of SPAR UK since 2011, and became a member of the Supervisory Board of SPAR International in 2017.

James Hall & Co serves a network of independent SPAR retailers and company-owned SPAR stores across Northern England from its base at Bowland View in Preston, Lancashire.

Speaking about his election as the eighth President in the history of SPAR International, Hall said: “SPAR is an internationally renowned organisation, and I am grateful to have the opportunity to work with the Board and SPAR country organisations to collectively grow and develop the SPAR brand.

“SPAR has a proud history of grocery retailing, and as we move forward, I am committed to building on this legacy and drive growth. Together, we will continue to meet the evolving needs of our shoppers and make a positive impact on local communities around the world. I take this opportunity to thank my fellow Board members for their trust and this appointment.”

There are now over 13,940 SPAR stores operating under one of the SPAR formats in 49 countries around the world, employing over 472,000 people.

NAM Implications:
  • Given his experience as both a corporate member and SPAR Board member…
  • …Dominic should be able to hit the ground running.
  • i.e. without a need to ‘tinker with the mechanism’
  • In other words, anticipate that SPAR will continue to build on its legacy and drive growth.
