Aldi has launched ‘Colleague Shops’ on its distribution sites across the UK to give warehouse operations and office workers the chance to buy products that can’t be sold in its public stores.
The scheme means that products that are still safe to consume find a home rather than going to waste. The discounter stated that the initiative was expected to prevent an estimated 240 tonnes of food from being wasted each year.
Following a trial at its Darlington Regional Distribution Centre, Colleague Shops are being rolled out across all 11 of Aldi’s Regional Distribution Centres.
“The Colleague Shop is another example of how we’re working to cut food waste across our operations,” said Luke Emery, National Sustainability Director at Aldi UK.
“It’s a practical initiative that benefits both colleagues and the environment, and we’re pleased to extend it nationwide following a successful pilot.”
Aldi is aiming to reduce food waste by 90% by 2030, against a 2017 baseline.
