Aldi has revealed that it has spent an extra £1.6bn with British suppliers since the start of the pandemic.
This includes £125m more spent with British meat, poultry and dairy farmers after sourcing all of its core range of fresh meat, eggs, butter, milk and cream from local suppliers.
Last January, the discounter announced that it planned to increase the amount of food and drink it buys from local suppliers by £3.5bn annually by the end of 2025. Aldi reaffirmed this promise today and said it was helping hundreds more small British businesses to grow.
Giles Hurley, Chief Executive Officer at Aldi UK, commented: “We were the fastest-growing supermarket in the UK in 2021 and that has only been possible by working closely, over long periods, with hundreds of British suppliers.
“As we continue to grow, opening new stores across the UK, we are determined to ensure that the vast majority of our grocery products continue to come from British suppliers, just as they do now.”
Aldi, which currently has over 950 stores, is aiming to open an average of one new outlet a week during 2022.
NAM Implications:
- Clean simple dealing and follow-through.
- With price and quality the key ingredients.
- A no-brainer for local suppliers…?
