Getir, one of the pioneers of rapid grocery delivery, has marked its first anniversary of operating in the UK by outlining investment plans for the market.
Getir’s e-bikes and e-mopeds began making deliveries in London in January 2021. It is now operational in around 20 cities and towns, including Manchester, Birmingham, Liverpool and Portsmouth, creating around 4,000 jobs.
Globally, the company’s valuation has risen to over US$7.7bn and it has pledged to invest £100m into the UK as it looks to “expand significantly” in 2022 and beyond. It expects its workforce to grow to around 10,000 by the end of this year.
Turancan Salur, Regional General Manager, said: “2021 was an extremely successful year for Getir as we began our global expansion. “There is no better city to launch international expansion from than London, due to its worldwide status and welcoming, cosmopolitan and diverse nature.
“From only five stores when we opened a year ago, we now serve our customers from 115 stores which has created thousands of jobs – all from the area surrounding our stores. We deliver groceries within minutes of them being ordered and are able to support many local producers around every city and town that we operate in.
“We have beaten all expectations for 2021 and plan to go even further this year; if there is demand out there, we’ll be ready to serve it.”
Faster, on-demand delivery is the latest frontier in the battle for grocery shoppers with a host of start-ups taking on established supermarket players and specialists like Deliveroo to capitalise on the surge in online shopping.
Earlier this month, Tesco revealed that it plans to have its rapid delivery service Whoosh available from at least 600 stores by the end of 2023 to ensure it has a significant presence in the fast-growing quick commerce market.
