The Physical Store As A Marketplace? Yes It’s Happening!

by Dean McElwee, eCommerce leader and author of eCommerce for CEOs

Just when you thought you had seen everything…well you haven’t. Many retailers have set up marketplaces, Walmart, Target to name two. The idea is simple. You sign up as a seller on the marketplace and sell your goods at your price, and then either the retailer does the fulfilment or you do it.

But here is a novel twist… Mediamarkt in Germany is offering what it calls ‘Space-as-a-Service’ to online sellers to allow them to rent out space in their stores (more here). In WeWork language, it’s a new sexy service, but in actual fact it’s a concession or store within a store enabled for its online digital sellers.

It’s a great example of technology enabling offline, and it gives these companies the ability to test out their SKUs in a physical environment. This could be a great win for sellers and Mediamarkt too!
