The chairman of John Lewis has urged the government to scrap the business rates system and replace it with a new land tax to enable high street retailers to compete more fairly with online rivals.
Sharon White, an economist who previously worked as the Treasury’s most senior civil servant, told The Telegraph that radical reform is required to provide a “much more stable and enduring way to tax” with bricks & mortar retail in turmoil from the pandemic and the shift to shopping online.
