Just days after opening its biggest UK store in Nottingham, Poundland has revealed that it will open an even larger store in the North East on Saturday 26 February that will feature its expanded food range.
The new 19,000 sq. ft. outlet at Teesside Park in Stockton-on-Tees will be over three times the size of an average Poundland store. It will be on two levels with a large PEP&CO clothing and home department on a 5,500 sq. ft. mezzanine floor. The store will also feature expanded pet, entertainment, electrical, stationery, toys, and health & beauty ranges.
Teesside Park will join the group’s growing number of stores – set to pass 350 this year – to offer chilled and frozen food. And it will be one of around 20 stores across the country getting fresh fruit and vegetables, as well as a selection of beers, wines and spirits.
Poundland debuted its expanded fresh food range at the store in Nottingham last weekend with the aim of attracting shoppers to do their weekly grocery shop with the retailer.
Teesside Park will feature extra wide aisles to make navigating the store easier, as well as trolleys and supermarket-style belted checkouts.
They will also be a food-to-go area at the front of the store, offering takeaway coffee from a Lavazza self-serve bar, and snacks and pastries from the Poundbakery.
Austin Cooke, Poundland’s Retail and Transformation Director, said: “We’re looking forward to bringing the best Poundland in Britain to Teesside.
“Our first store on this scale – in Nottingham – wowed customers who couldn’t believe how amazing the newest and best version of Poundland was, and we can’t wait to bring the same wow experience and range to the North East.”
NAM Implications:
- Key will be Poundland’s ability to transition to a ‘full-offering’ retail store…
- …moving away from the ‘relative simplicity’ of operating a single-price limited offering small store.
- But if it works…
