Bottled Water Sold By Leading Irish Retailers Recalled Over Safety Fears

Bottled water from many of Ireland’s biggest supermarkets and convenience chains has been recalled over concerns about elevated levels of arsenic.

The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) issued a list of effected products on Friday.  Lines being recalled include Aldi/Comeragh (Still and Sparkling), Applegreen (Still), Broderick (Still), Dunnes Stores (Still, Sparkling and Flavoured), Itica (Still), Lidl (Still), Londis (Still), Mace (Still), Macari (Still), Plane (Still), San Marino (Still), and SPAR (Still).

The FSAI said that the recall was due to some water products from one well being detected with arsenic levels above the permitted legal limit.

It is advising consumers not to drink the implicated batches of water but described the recall as a precautionary measure with the raised levels detected not considered to pose any short or long-term adverse health effects.

Retailers have been told to remove the implicated batches from sale and display a point of sale recall notice in stores.

The move comes just over week after the FSAI advised people not to drink two types of bottled water from the SPAR and Londis chains after discovering the higher than normal levels of arsenic.

On Saturday, the FSAI said the latest recall “is part of an ongoing investigation into Celtic Pure being undertaken by the FSAI and the HSE”.  Celtic Pure is a leading private label drinks manufacturer in the country.

NAM Implications:
  • Echoes of the set-back caused by the Perrier challenge all those years ago…
  • Only more so, given the growth of market since then…
  • In other words, anticipate a major hit to the brand credibility of the brands affected…
