Chapel Down Hires New Chief Executive

Leading English winemaker Chapel Down has appointed James Pennefather as its new Chief Executive.

Due to start in February next year, Pennefather will replace Andrew Carter, who resigned in September to take up the CEO role at ale brewer Timothy Taylor.

The move came after a difficult period for Chapel Down, impacted partly by poor weather. In June, the company revealed that it was considering a sale of the business as part of a strategic review to explore funding options to support its growth plans. However, in October, it called off the sale after failing to attract a buyer.

Commenting on Pennefather’s appointment, Chapel Down Chairman Martin Glenn said: “We are delighted to have appointed James, who is an outstanding business leader with deep experience in building premium drinks brands within emerging categories, developing strong customer relationships in the UK and globally and enhancing shareholder value.

“Chapel Down has made excellent progress as a business and a brand, and James is well placed to continue Chapel Down’s development and growth.”

Pennefather added: “Chapel Down is the leading English winemaker and I look forward to leading the business as it pursues the next stage of transformational growth for customers and shareholders.

“Andrew leaves a strong legacy, and I will be working closely with him and the Chapel Down management team to ensure a seamless transition.”

The company also revealed today that it had accepted the resignation of its Finance Director Robert Smith, who will step down from the role in April, two years after he joined the business. Recruitment for his successor will commence in the near future.
