Aldi Makes It Easier To ‘Buy British’ While Lidl Supports Local Farmers

Aldi has introduced a ‘Best of British’ section to its website in a bid to help shoppers support domestic suppliers.

The discounter’s new dedicated webpage includes a selection of British groceries, ranging from meat to dairy products and everyday essentials.

Aldi noted that over 80% of its sales came from British suppliers last year, with it being the market leader in sales of local fresh fruit and veg. The retailer works with around 5,000 suppliers across the UK.

“Our Best of British webpage aims to give our customers the chance to navigate British products more easily whilst supporting the thousands of local suppliers that we work with,” said Julie Ashfield, Managing Director of Buying at Aldi UK.

“We are proud to champion so many British suppliers and they are at the heart of our success, allowing us to offer our customers great British quality at the best possible prices.”

Meanwhile, Lidl GB announced today that it was fortifying its commitment to supporting British farmers by transitioning its root veg suppliers to long-term contracts.

Representing an investment of over £70m, the new contracts of up to three years are aimed at offering those supplying Lidl’s winter veg staples, including carrots, parsnips, and swedes, the certainty to invest in their operations.

Lidl stated that the move underscores its commitment to ‘Backing British’ and the development of local economies. It sources two-thirds of its core produce from the UK, working with over 650 suppliers across the country.

Paul Gibson, Buying Director at Lidl GB, commented: “As the whole market faces challenges, including unpredictable weather patterns, our decision to transition suppliers to longer contracts underscores our commitment to supporting local producers. Not only is it an investment in the quality and consistency of our supply chain, but it’s also testament of our dedication to the British food industry.”
