Following recent rumours, Aldi has revealed that it’s begun trialling new checkout-free technology at one of its stores in London.
The system allows customers to scan a smartphone app to enter the store, pick up their shopping, and simply walk out without the need to pay at a till. Shortly after their visit, they will get an email receipt and be charged automatically using their chosen payment method.
Following the recent launch of Amazon’s ‘just walk out’ system in the UK, based around cutting-edge sensor and camera technology, the likes of Tesco and Morrisons have also been testing similar checkout-free formats.
Aldi stated that its staff are currently testing the new store concept and further trials will be carried out with members of the public.
Giles Hurley, Chief Executive for Aldi UK and Ireland, said: “We are always looking to redefine what it means to be a discount retailer, and the technology involved in this trial will give us a wealth of learnings.
“We are really excited to be testing this concept that will enable customers to pick from our range of quality products, all available at unbeatable prices, then leave the store without having to pay at a till.”
Amid concerns that shop workers will lose out from the introduction of checkout-free formats, the discounter highlighted that its new concept store will employ approximately the same number of staff as a typical Aldi Local.
NAM Implications:
- The issue is not the technical inevitability…
- …but the fact that this Aldi, a mere discounter!
- Add the inevitability of a fast roll-out…
- …and ask yourself if you are really doing enough to optimise Aldi’s (and Lidl) UK success?
