Aldi Tackling Plastic In Fresh Chickens Packaging

Aldi is continuing its drive to reduce unnecessary plastic with a trial to remove the plastic trays from its whole fresh chickens.

Instead, the birds are packaged in shrink wrapping, which will reduce the amount of plastic used by an average of 66% and eliminate 116 tonnes of plastic annually if successful.

Richard Gorman, Plastics and Packaging Director at Aldi, said: “We are committed to reducing plastic and unnecessary packaging wherever possible, while still offering the highest-quality products at the lowest prices.

“We’re always looking for ways to help our customers to shop even more sustainably at Aldi, and plan to have all of our products in reusable, recyclable or compostable packaging by 2025.”

The discounter has pledged to halve the volume of plastic packaging it uses by 2025. Other recent initiatives have included ditching single-use plastic from all its own-label tea bags, a ban on plastic egg packaging, and removing plastic straws from all its own-label drink cartons.
