Aldi is claiming to be the first supermarket in the UK to launch own label concentrated cleaning liquids for refilling spray bottles.
Six new ‘Power Force’ concentrated products, including window, shower, kitchen and bathroom concentrates, will go on sale from 24 September and retail at £1.99. Each one allows customers to mix the concentrate with tap water to create four bottles of cleaning spray, reducing the need to buy single-use spray bottles each time.
Aldi stated the move that will save an estimated 550 tonnes of single-use plastic a year.
Luke Peech, the retailer’s Managing Director of Corporate Responsibility, said: “At Aldi we’re always looking at new ways to reduce waste and especially to remove and replace any unnecessary, single-use plastic.
“Our new concentrated refills will do just that. And, even if only half of our customers opt for them, it will take more than 250 lorries off our roads every year.”
Aldi is aiming to have all own label packaging recyclable, reusable or compostable by 2022, and halve the amount of plastic packaging it sells by 2025.
Refill systems are becoming increasingly popular with major brands such as Unilever and Procter & Gamble rolling out more products in refillable form.
Tesco is also taking part in trials of the new ‘Loop’ scheme where online shoppers are able to buy leading food, household cleaning, and toiletry brands in reusable containers which are delivered to their door, then collected once used and sanitised to be refilled.
