Amazon opened another of its till-free ‘just walk out’ grocery stores in the UK yesterday as it restarts its expansion programme after a pause at the end of last year.
Located at 20 Gracechurch Street in Monument, London, the site takes the total number of Amazon Fresh stores in the country to 19.
Amazon had opened another new Fresh store on Tuesday in Croydon, just days after closing one of its stores in Dalston, north east London, less than 18 months after it was launched.
Commenting on the recent closure, an Amazon spokesperson said: “Just like other retailers, we regularly review our business and from time to time adjust to ensure we are able to best serve our customers.
“We remain committed to Amazon Fresh UK physical stores.”
Amazon pressed pause on the roll-out of its grocery stores in the UK last summer due to lacklustre sales and the weakening economic environment.
Reports have suggested that the company wants to have over 260 of the hi-tech stores operating in the UK before the end of 2024 to challenge the established players in the grocery sector.
