Asda Appoints Tesco Exec As Chief People Officer

Asda has appointed James Goodman as its new Chief People Officer, replacing Hayley Tatum, who is leaving after 14 years with the retailer.

Goodman will join Asda later this year from Tesco, where he has spent twelve years, most recently as the People Director for the UK and ROI, responsible for all people-related matters, including labour relations, recruitment, learning, early careers and health and wellbeing. He has also worked in Shanghai as Sourcing Director for Tesco’s home and clothing division and spent six years at Gap.

Asda’s Chairman, Allan Leighton, commented: “I’m looking forward to welcoming James to Asda later this year. He brings a huge amount of experience with him and will be a vital part of the leadership team as we continue to rebuild and deliver on our ambition to once again be the best place to work in the UK.”

Goodman added: “I’m thrilled to be joining Asda and – most of all – being able to introduce myself to the wonderful colleagues that power Asda day in and day out. Asda is a great business, and I can’t wait to roll my sleeves up and join Allan and the rest of the leadership team on our mission to return Asda to where it belongs, as a champion for hard working families and a brilliant place to work.”

Asda has made several new senior appointments since Leighton joined the business late last year, tasked with restoring growth at the struggling supermarket.

NAM Implications:
  • The new Chief People Officer knows the Asda history.
  • Appreciates the task ahead and strategy.
  • And patently is aware of the deadlines.
  • Fingers crossed…
