Asda Avoids Christmas Disruption After HGV Drivers Call Off Strike Action

HGV drivers based at Asda’s Rochdale distribution centre, working on an outsourced Wincanton contract, have called off plans for a series of strikes this month after securing an improved pay deal.

Earlier this week, the Unite union announced that around 80 drivers would be taking industrial action over claims they were being paid £1.24 an hour less than their counterparts doing the same role for Asda at its Lutterworth distribution centre in Leicestershire. The union stated that the Rochdale drivers’ overtime, night, weekend and bank holiday rates were also less than those paid at Lutterworth.

Unite stated yesterday that following an improved pay offer of 8.25%, plus premium overtime rates, the strikes have been called off, and the dispute is at an end.

The union had previously warned that Asda faced the prospect of shortages of chilled foods over the festive period due to the planned strikes.

Unite general secretary, Sharon Graham, said: “This is a strong result for the hardworking HGV drivers based at Asda’s Rochdale distribution centre. Our workers deserve fair pay – which Asda and Wincanton can afford – and by them standing together we have achieved just that.”

Unite regional officer, Paul Lomax, added: “It’s encouraging to see an offer that reflects the importance of our members. There is power in a union, and we urge those wishing to improve their wages and working lives to join Unite.”
