Asda Creates The Largest Refill Zone In A UK Supermarket

Asda is continuing its trial of product refill zones with the opening of its largest to date at its Monk’s Cross store in York.

The superstore stocks over 100 branded and own-label products sold in loose and unpackaged formats in a large 18-bay refill zone as part of the retailer’s drive to reduce the use of plastic and offer more sustainable choices to shoppers.

Branded products involved in the trial include Yorkshire Tea, Kellogg’s cereals, Napolina pasta, and Mars pet food, alongside Asda own cereals, rice and pasta. Refills of personal care and household cleaning products from P&G and Unilever are also available.

All the refill products are claimed to be the same price or cheaper than packaged equivalents.

The York refill store is the third opened by Asda, following the launch of its flagship store in Leeds last October and the recent opening in Toryglen, Glasgow. A fourth will open in Milton Keynes by the end of the year.

Asda director of commercial sustainability Susan Thomas said: “Creating the largest refill zone in a UK supermarket is a real achievement and was made possible thanks to a huge cross-functional effort from Asda colleagues and our supplier partners.

“We hope the sheer variety offered across our range of 100 branded and own-label loose products, plus bringing together several simple ways for customers to reduce, reuse or recycle at home, means every one of our shoppers can find a reason to participate in our offer and help move us towards refill being part of every shopping trip.”
