Asda has made several changes to the structure of its senior commercial food team which aim to “simplify internal processes to allow for quicker decision making” and enable the retailer to adapt better to customers’ needs.
The changes have been implemented by Derek Lawlor, who was recently promoted to the role of Senior VP of Food and General Merchandise following the departure of Nick Jones to fashion retailer Joules.
Under the new structure, Lizzy Massey, Asda’s VP of Ambient Grocery, will become head of Non-Edible Grocery. Edible Grocery will be led by Tracy Ford, who is currently VP for Global Execution.
Meanwhile, Paul Gillow, VP of Own Brand, is taking on a broader remit with Commercial Strategy added to his portfolio, and Richard Dent has been formally appointed to the role of VP of Fresh and Frozen, having held the position on an interim basis.
Lawlor commented: “These changes will give suppliers better direct access to senior leaders within the business, which will allow us to deepen relationships with our supply base for the benefit of customers by driving greater quality, value and innovation opportunities.
“By structuring our core business into Non-Edible and Edible it means we’re able to benefit from the experience of two incredibly knowledgeable leaders in Lizzy and Tracy – to utilise their expertise in their own areas, whilst also working collaboratively to maximise shared opportunities. Paul is continuing to deliver success in growing our Own Brand ranges and Richard has already made a big impact in our Fresh and Frozen business.”
The move comes just weeks after Asda stated that it would “accelerate” its price position and continue its investment in technology to improve its customer offer after the plans to merge with Sainsbury’s failed.
Lawlor added: “I have every confidence that this is the right team to deliver on our strategy and help us go even further for our customers, and I’m looking forward to rolling up our sleeves and getting on with the job in hand – delivering the very best for our customers.”
Asda stated that the structure of its general merchandise team will remain unchanged and led by Lisa Lennon.
NAM Implications:
- Asda NAMs will know (or should know) enough re the historical record of these key contacts personnel…
- …to assess how they will adjust to the Walmart-Asda simple focus on output…
- …and your contribution to output might be a good starting point…
