Asda Showcases Its ‘Modern Shopping Environment’ At Revamped Store

Asda has completed its largest single-store investment in several years as part of a £50m upgrade programme that began in 2024.

The £2m project at the 61,000 sq. ft. Pilsworth supermarket in Bury, Greater Manchester, began earlier this year to introduce several improvements for shoppers, including a more modern look, new feature lighting, and updated signage.

A consolidated food hall has also been created, simplifying the layout of the shop floor to make it easier for customers to find what they need. The produce section now features new low-level chilled units, while a dedicated wine and spirits zone has been added. Enhancements have also been made to modernise its George and general merchandise departments.

The store’s café is also the first to be transformed into its new ‘Asda Kitchen’ format as part of a wider programme to reinvigorate the supermarket’s cafés. The refreshed café is claimed to offer a modern dining experience with a coffee shop atmosphere.

Dan Grindrod, General Store Manager for Asda Pilsworth, said: “After months of hard work from all involved, we’re excited to welcome the local community into our newly upgraded Pilsworth store. This investment has enabled us to create a modern shopping environment that makes it easier for the customers we serve to find the products and value they’ve come to expect from Asda.”

As part of its turnaround plan, Asda has cut prices on over 4,000 products to re-establish its value credentials and win back shoppers. However, analysts have said that Asda’s problems are not just about price, with its stores being poorly managed and suffering from product availability and customer service issues.

Earlier this week, it was reported that Asda’s senior staff will not receive their bonuses after a year of declining sales and market share.

NAM Implications:
  • The problem can be that these great ideas can be diluted by stores being poorly managed…
  • …and suffering from product availability and customer service issues.
  • Topped by removal of senior staff bonus…
