Dunnes, Ireland’s largest supermarket in terms of market share, has joined Tesco and Aldi in giving staff a 10% bonus on their hourly pay (backdated to 9 March) for the duration of the coronavirus crisis.
The retailer agreed to the temporary pay hike after receiving a petition from the Mandate trade union signed by more than 3,000 workers. Dunnes has also promised to increase the staff discount to 20% and establish a coronavirus sick pay scheme, meeting all employee demands.
Mandate General Secretary John Douglas: “There are thousands of retail workers all across the country who are putting their own health at risk during this public health crisis … they deserve a premium for the hard work they’re putting in and continue to put in throughout this COVID-19 pandemic.”
