Iceland Offers Discount For Over 60s

Iceland and The Food Warehouse chains have launched a new discount exclusively for the over 60s that gives them 10% off their shopping to help counter the rising cost of living.

There’s no minimum spend or product restrictions, but the discount is only available on Tuesdays. Anyone aged 60 or over will be able to claim the offer in-store from next week by showing proof of age.

The retailer said it decided to launch the offer after Age UK revealed that three-quarters of older people in the country (9.4 million) are worried about the rising cost of living.

“We have a long history of supporting our over 60s customers, such as when we launched ‘Elderly Hour’ at the height of the pandemic,” said Richard Walkers, Managing Director of Iceland.

“The cost of living crisis has made support for these customers even more important, which is why I’m proud that we’re finding new ways to support them, including the launch of this discount. We hope it will help all those in this age category to cut costs where they can.”

Official figures released yesterday showed headline CPI inflation hit 9% last month, whilst Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey earlier this week outlined his fears of an “apocalyptic” rise in food prices.

NAM Implications:
  • A pointer for others?
  • The key is whether a rival can launch a better offer.
  • Meanwhile, Iceland have the innovator’s advantage!
  • One to watch?
