Morrisons Marks 125th Anniversary With TV Ad And ‘Basket Bonus’

Morrisons will air a new TV ad this evening to celebrate 125 years since its founder William Morrison first started the business as a market stall in Bradford.

The 40-second ‘Over the counter, over the years’ advert follows a conversation between Morrisons staff and customers, played out over 125 years. It aims to show that while a lot has evolved in customers’ lives since 1899, their “passion for Morrisons great quality fresh food has remained”.

The ad is part of a wider campaign, which includes shorter TV Market Street promotions, radio, press, digital display, social media and out-of-home, as well as activity in Morrisons stores and online.

Morrisons is also rolling out offers and activities for its customers across the UK, including the chance for members of its More Card loyalty scheme to participate in its biggest-ever ‘Basket Bonus’.

During the Morrisons birthday month period (19 June to 14 July), shoppers can scan their More Card or app to see if they are in with a chance of a ‘Basket Bonus’. This will include anything from free products to up to 5,000 extra More Points being added to their account. Each week, 10 of its customers will also become a Morrisons More Points Millionaire, meaning they will claim a £1,000 bonus to spend in-store or online.

Chief Executive Rami Baitiéh commented: “For 125 years, since William Morrisons founded our company, customers have been enjoying our great quality British food. A lot has evolved during that time, and we have gone from a single market stall to having our famous Market Street counters with skilled colleagues such as our butchers, fishmongers, and bakers in our stores nationwide.

“One thing that has remained constant throughout is our commitment to offering great tasting affordable food for everyone. We look forward to celebrating this milestone moment, and the legacy of William Morrisons and Sir Ken, with our customers over the coming weeks.”

NAM Implications:
  • Morrisons back to its roots…
  • …without Ken?
  • (We shall see…)
