Sainsbury’s Closing Some Convenience Stores

Sainsbury’s is temporarily closing 12 of its convenience stores in areas where shopper numbers have plummeted due to the government’s coronavirus lockdown.

The retailer said some areas had become virtual ghost towns and it could not justify keeping these smaller stores open while its main supermarkets faced huge pressures to keep shelves stocked.

“These are stores that have seen significantly fewer customers in recent days as people are working from home,” said a Sainsbury’s spokesperson.

Until they re-open, all affected staff will be moved to neighbouring stores.

NAM Implications:
  • A pragmatic and realistic move to optimise resources.
  • The essence of good retailing…
