Sainsbury’s has revealed that it has created 12,000 seasonal roles, almost double the number recruited last year. With online sales surging, the retailer stated that it was gearing up to serve as many online shoppers as possible this Christmas.
The temporary staff will join Sainsbury’s supermarkets and help fulfil online grocery orders, from making the deliveries to picking and packing products in store.
The retailer also highlighted that it was creating 6,000 permanent roles over the next few months, the majority of which will support the growth of its online grocery operation. The group said that this expansion will offer staff affected by its recent decision to close its meat, fish and deli counters and some Argos stores the opportunity to redeploy.
This year Sainsbury’s has more than doubled its groceries online capacity. The retailer expects to fulfil over 750,000 online grocery orders a week during December.
Clo Moriarty, Sainsbury’s Retail and Digital Director, said: “This Christmas will be like no other and the way customers want to shop for their celebrations has changed completely. To help them find everything they need and shop how they want, we’re recruiting thousands more Christmas colleagues than in previous years.”
