Sainsbury’s has expanded its rapid grocery delivery trials with Deliveroo and Uber Eats to hundreds of stores.
Under a new two-year contract with Deliveroo, around 100 stores across the UK will now offer the service. It means 30% of people in Deliveroo zones can access more than 1,000 products from Sainsbury’s and have them delivered in as little as 20 minutes.
Complementing its own Chop Chop fast delivery service, Sainsbury’s Deliveroo trial began from 10 stores last October to offer more options to its customers during the pandemic. The expansion includes 22 new shops in London, with the remaining stores spread across cities including Liverpool, Newcastle, Leeds, York, Aberdeen and Glasgow.
Sainsbury’s Director of E-Commerce Nigel Blunt said: “Working with Deliveroo has helped us offer home grocery deliveries to even more customers, bringing them a super-fast service when they need something in a hurry.
“We know how much Sainsbury’s customers value being able to shop for food as quickly and conveniently as possible and we’re delighted to be able to expand this service further.”
Deliveroo, which made a disappointing debut on the London Stock Exchange last month, forged partnerships with Waitrose, Aldi, Morrisons, McColl’s, M&S and the Co-op during 2020.
Eric French, Chief Marketplace Officer at Deliveroo, commented: “Deliveroo’s on-demand grocery partnerships have proven vital for so many people during the pandemic, allowing families to get the food and household items they need and want quickly.”
Meanwhile, Sainsbury’s partnership with Uber Eats is being extended from 20 stores to cover a similar number as Deliveroo in major cities. Blunt stated that the tie-up had helped increase its home grocery delivery capacity.
Uber Eats’ General Manager Toussaint Wattinne said: “The addition of these new stores will provide greater convenience for customers across the country at a time when home delivery options are so important.”
