Sainsbury’s Extends Nectar Scheme To Argos

Sainsbury’s has started allowing members of Nectar loyalty to collect points on Argos purchases for the first time. Previously, cardholders could only spend their Nectar points at Argos.

The grocer, which has owned Argos since 2016, said Nectar members can now earn 1 point per £1 spent on the Argos range, both in-store and online. The points will also be doubled if purchases are made between 18 September and 26 September.

“We’re constantly looking for new ways to reward our customers, so we are very excited to offer a new way for shoppers to get the most out of their Nectar points with one of the nation’s most loved brands,” said James Moir, Managing Director at Nectar.

”The Nectar app is a one-stop virtual shop to make points work harder and we hope that with this new offer, our customers can kick start their early Christmas shopping and get more from their purchases at Argos.”

The move comes at a time when retailers appear to be ramping promotions based around their loyalty schemes amid the toughening trading conditions. Tesco announced yesterday that it would offer members of its Clubcard scheme discounts of up 50% on hundreds of products, whilst Lidl recently launched its ‘Plus’ app which provides shoppers with rewards and reductions when they scan their digital card at the till.

NAM Implications:
  • A no-brainer potential lock-in for Argos customers…
  • …apart from linking food and non-food across the Sainsbury’s Group.
  • A pointer for others in terms of adding value to loyalty?
