Sainsbury’s is continuing its drive to reduce plastic waste by trialling the removal of plastic bags for loose fruit and veg, and encouraging customers to bring their own containers or purchase a reusable bag.
The trial at its Lincoln and Kidlington superstores will run into August as part of the retailer’s pledged to remove plastic bags from its stores entirely.
Judith Batchelar, Director of Sainsbury’s Brand commented: “We’re pleased to be making a further commitment to our customers as we work with them to offer new ways to reduce unnecessary plastic. This is just one of the efforts we are making as a business and we look forward to hearing how our customers respond and adapt throughout the trial.”
Sainsbury’s has been implementing a range of initiatives designed to reduce, reuse, replace and recycle more plastic.
Most recently, it launched water refill stations at over 300 stores and began a series of Reserve Vending Recycling trials that allow customers to return plastic bottles in exchange for 5p coupons towards their next shop.
