Sainsbury’s has announced the launch of a free 16-week incubator programme, aimed specifically at black-led start-ups. The supermarket giant said the move includes a commitment of £1m to support the transition of the products of such start-ups to supermarket shelves.
The ‘Thrive with Sainsbury’s’ programme, created and delivered in partnership with Foundervine and Mission Ventures, is open to black-led entrepreneurial food and drink businesses that have an “exciting new product” that is capable of scaling up to supermarket level. Eligible startups call apply until 16 August 2022.
Nine successful applicants will receive a welcome grant of £20,000, as well as more than 150 hours of practical one-to-one support and group learning opportunities. Any brand that secures a Sainsbury’s listing will receive additional funding of up to £105,000, at various stages during the process.
Silika Shellie-Manso, Director of Grocery Innovation at Sainsbury’s, said: “A key focus of our Win in Food strategy is to bring innovation to our customers and at Sainsbury’s we’ve always been passionate about seeking out new or emerging brands. As an inclusive retailer, we believe that to offer great food and drink for everyone, it should be made by everyone.”
NAM Implications:
- A potential win win for innovators.
- A first-refusal opportunity for Sainsbury’s.
- Why not?
