Tesco is expanding trials of its new GetGo checkout-free concept with the addition of three stores operating under a new hybrid format based on customer feedback from the first site that launched in October last year.
A second GetGo store was opened in Chiswell Street, London yesterday. A further two will open in the next few months– one in Parr’s Way, London and another at Aston University, Birmingham.
All three sites will allow customers to shop and pay without scanning a product or using a checkout. This is achieved via a combination of cameras and weight sensors alongside an AI system to establish what products people have chosen and then charging them automatically via the Tesco app when they leave.
However, for the first time, the new stores will also offer the option of using a self-service or attended checkout if the customer prefers.
Kevin Tindall, Managing Director for Tesco Convenience, said: “We are excited to expand our trial of GetGo and to see what customers think about our new hybrid model, which offers them different options for seamless shopping.
“Whether customers choose the checkout-free option or prefer to use a checkout, we want to make the shopping trip as quick and convenient as possible.”

- …without queuing…
- …and unpacking and repacking their trolley.
