Tesco Maintains Solid Growth In Northern Ireland

Latest data from Kantar shows that overall grocery sales in Northern Ireland grew by 1.2% in the 52 weeks to 24 March 2019, with Tesco maintaining its place as the country’s largest retailer.

Douglas Faughnan, consumer insight director at Kantar, commented: “Tesco’s overall share was unmoved from last year at 35.2%, with the grocer also registering solid sales growth of 1.2%.

“Sainsbury’s solidified its position as the number two retailer with sales up 0.9% compared with last year.  Sainsbury’s continues to hold market share of 17.3% – marginally ahead of Asda on 17.0%.

“Lidl’s growth of 6.8% over the past 12 months was the largest sales increase by some distance and all signs suggest this trend is set to continue.  Lidl now accounts for 5.9% of the market – exactly half of the share it holds in the Republic of Ireland – which means it still has plenty of room for growth north of the border.”

Similar data released yesterday for the grocery market in the Republic of Ireland showed good overall growth, with the discounters and Dunnes the best performers.
