Tesco has revealed that it is planning to open a Jack’s store in Walton, Liverpool. The outlet would be the group’s third under its new discount format in the Merseyside area following openings in Edge Hill and St Helens.
A spokesperson for Jack’s confirmed the move on Twitter but gave no opening date. The store will open inside a former Tesco Metro on County Road.
Following a recent opening, the group now has nine Jack’s outlets around the UK. Tesco had promised to have at least 15 outlets operating by now when it launched the format back in September last year.
Recent reports have suggested that the first stores were having limited success in attracting shoppers away from local Aldi and Lidl outlets, although Tesco recently stressed that it had seen a “strong response” to the new chain.
The latest Jack’s outlet in Rawtenstall, Lancashire, is said be more like a cash & carry than a discounter. The store, which is much bigger than previous Jack’s stores, combines own label products with branded items and offers discounts for goods bought in bulk.
Tesco’s longer-term plans for the chain have not yet been revealed.
NAM Implications:
- Tesco obviously feeling their way forward with the Jack’s format…
- …and will roll-out any success, as fast as is appropriate.
- In other words, don’t write off Jack’s yet.
