Unitas Wholesale’s retailer support scheme ‘Plan for Profit’ is set to launch a new product check tool to help independents prepare for the new high in fat, sugar or salt (HFSS) legislation coming into effect from this autumn.
In May, the government delayed some of the planned restrictions on promoting HFSS food and drink due to come into force in England as part of measures to mitigate the ongoing cost of living crisis. A ban on promotions such as BOGOFs or 50% extra free deals in supermarkets and convenience stores has been put back until October 2023. However, the placement of HFSS products in high footfall areas like checkouts, end-of-aisle units, store entrances, and designated queueing areas will be banned for some stores from this October.
Regulations in Wales and Scotland are also currently being reviewed and are set to be announced soon.
Speaking about the new platform from Unitas, Tracey Redfearn, its Plan for Profit Controller, said: “With many brands set to reformulate their key lines to ensure compliance, it is important retailers are aware of the products this new legislation affects. The Plan for Profit HFSS product check tool allows retailers to identify which of their stocked lines are HFSS compliant, as well as those that are impacted so they can make an informed decision about potential changes to their product range.”
The buying group’s HFSS product check tool will be available for retailers to access from mid-September through the Plan for Profit website and its own dedicated site.
